Andorra, is 170km from Limoux. This is worth a day of anybody's time just to say you have been there.
Take the D118 out of Limoux towards Quillan and keep going up and up for about 70km until you get to Font Romu.

You will need warm clothes as often there is snow at this height and above. Take the sign posts for Andorra-la-Vella and go the long way round avoiding the tunnels until you get there. For those who ski this is the place to be in winter.

Andorra is duty free haven for visitors, hence the large number of shops and queues at the garages, so if you have the chance fill up here.

You can make your return journey by leaving Andorra through Spain, head towards Puigcerda following signs for Francia and ultimately back to Mont Louis via Font Romeu or Saillagouse. It's a 200mile round trip, the way up and down is beautiful but slow.

Take some food, water and warm clothes with you, it's along day and can be cold outside when you are high up in Andorra.

What I didn't say was that the D118 is the route of the River Aude down through the mountains from Font Romeu, which is where it starts its life no bigger than a running tap.

A long all day trip from Limoux
